The fossil gas industry works hard to portray gas as essential to the transition to a clean energy future. However, this ignores the fact that gas is expensive, risky, and dirty. New gas infrastructure locks in decades of new carbon emissions and slows the transition to clean energy. Real-world experience and ongoing research show that transitioning to a clean power system without gas is achievable using a suite of readily available policies, tools, and technologies.

This fact sheet provides insights into the latest research on achieving fossil-free electricity, outlines solutions for maximizing renewable electricity, and highlights policies to enable this change.

The following infographic, called Achieving Fossil Free Electricity, shows the many choices available for supporting & solar to achieve reliable, dispatchable fossil-free energy. Our companion online glossary provides info and links to additional resources on these technologies and policies to scale up renewables.

  • Don’t follow the US, our path takes the planet and all life to hell. Think for yourself, do what is best for you and the planet. The US is wrong most of the time, the US is dying because of their corruption, wars, greed and putting money before life.

  • We just have to get it right now. We no longer have the luxury of time to play about

  • Fossil gas is destroying our climate!! Don’t let cynical oil and gas industry exploit the Ukraine war to justify the lethal expansion and exporting of gas – it’s not needed!

  • Gas is expensive, risky and dirty- just like coal. No country should be following what the USA has been doing. America needs to shut down new gas and oil, close the pipelines, and invest in only clean energy. We must help our planet recover, and the ONLY way to do that is to shut down fossil fuels, and encourage big investment in solar and wind energy.

  • To say that gas is necessary or desirable to reach net zero in East or West is contrary to the facts.
Let’s leave gas behind and get on with the job of reaching this goal without fossil fuels.

  • I can only agree with Ms Woods statement

I see Mr Biden approved a handful of sites in the Gulf of Mexico….again
Of course for oil and gas extraction. So much for the “Climate President “

  • Research shows that achieving 100% renewable electricity systems is feasible, despite industry claims. Many countries are already achieving high levels of renewable energy penetration by implementing a combination of policy reforms, changes in grid operation, and the development of energy storage and other renewable energy generation.
Wind and solar met 12 percent of global electricity generation in 2022. The contribution of these two generation sources grew 17 percent and 24 percent, respectively, from the year before.
Technologies and policy solutions to achieve up to 80 or 90 percent renewable energy penetration are widely available. Some of the technologies needed to get to a 100 percent renewable electricity system are still under development.

  • Natural gas is a fossil fuel. It is not clean, a gas leak can quietly kill the occupants. Or blow up the building where the gas leak is occurring.

  • If you asked parents whether they are willing to destroy
the planet in order to drive their car what would they say?
Sure, go ahead and kill my children if that’s what it takes
to keep driving. Of course no would say that, but we are doing
just that. Fossil fuel companies are killing our planet. Why? For
profit. Simple as that. Fred A. Wilcox

  • What most people don’t realize is when any hydrocarbons are burned, from methane to bunker oil, not only is carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide produced, but also water, That water has to go somewhere. It ends up as rain in bigger storms causing flooding and rising seas If the water is lucky to get to the arctic and antarctic, it ends up as snow and ice that can still melt in the warmer months.
