The Paris climate goals demand a rapid, just transition from fossil fuels to clean energy. We’re pushing governments to lead the way by adopting policies to end oil and gas production.
OVERVIEW OF WORK
In order to achieve climate goals, governments and other decision makers must support a just and equitable move away from fossil fuels. We are pushing for precedent-setting leadership from governments to put policies in place to manage the decline of oil and gas and ensure a just transition for fossil-fuel dependent workers and communities.
Building from a growing group of first mover governments, we are pressuring for increasing numbers of national and regional governments to end new licenses and permits for oil and gas production, and to develop plans to wind down their existing production over time.

Over $70 billion dollars worth of Russian oil and gas licences could become part of a legal dispute between Russia and a group of oil multinationals. There have been press reports that a spokesperson for the Russian Natural Resources Ministry, said that the Russian Government was considering withdrawing the licence for ExxonMobil’s Sakhalin I offshore project because its costs are set to surge by 20 per cent to $17 billion. Higher costs mean delayed profits for the Russian State.
Here’s one to make you laugh or cry. For years, Exxon or Exxonsarous as it is sometimes known, has been the vanguard of the climate septics. It has funded some 40 right wing think tanks and front groups in an attempt to derail action on climate change. It has had undue influence at the White House. All you have to do is look at Exxonsecrets.org and you will see the evidence of Exxon’s misdemeanors laid bare.
The times really are a' changing. The state of California has launched an unprecedented lawsuit against the six largest carmakers in the US for allegedly contributing to global warming. The state has accused Ford, General Motors, Toyota, Honda, Chrysler and Nissan of creating a "public nuisance" and costing it millions of dollars. Environmental campaigners have hailed the lawsuit as a landmark event in the effort to deal with global warming.
Britain’s leading scientific body, the Royal Society, has challenged ExxonMobil to stop funding climate sceptics who are attempting to undermine the scientific consensus on global warming.
In an unprecedented step, the Royal Society, demands in its letter that the company withdraws support for dozens of groups that have "misrepresented the science of climate change by outright denial of the evidence". The scientists also strongly criticise Exxon’s own public statements on global warming, which they describe as "inaccurate and misleading".

This new report, “Public Enemies: Assessing MDB and G20 international finance institutions’ energy finance” looks at G20 country and MDB traceable international public finance for fossil fuels from 2020-2022 and finds they are still backing at least USD 47 billion per year in oil, gas, and coal projects.
This briefing assesses Shell’s fossil fuel extraction plans in light of Shell's appeal of a Dutch court verdict requiring the company to take responsibility for its climate pollution. Our analysis shows that Shell continues to plan for levels of oil and gas production and investment that undermine the world’s chances of curtailing climate disaster.
The countries that produce oil and gas from the North Sea (Norway, the UK, the Netherlands, Germany, and Denmark) rank among the countries with the greatest economic capacity and responsibility to rapidly phase out extraction, and to finance just transitions to renewable energy solutions domestically and abroad.
