From 2010-2021, the United States’ trade and development finance institutions provided nearly five times as much support to fossil fuels as to renewables — over $51.6 billion for fossils compared to just $10.9 billion for renewables.
“Biden’s climate legacy hangs in the balance — we need bold leadership, not tinkering around the edges. Declaring a climate emergency would make it clear that Biden views the climate crisis as an existential threat and unlock key powers to tackle climate change head-on and hasten a just transition to clean, renewable energy,” said Rees.
“We can’t transition away from fossil fuels by locking in five more years of deadly extraction, and Biden can’t claim to care about environmental justice while forcing oil and gas drilling on already burdened communities,” said Collin Rees.
Over 200 progressive groups sent a letter to the White House urging President Biden to resist Big Oil and invoke the Defense Production Act in order to ramp up the deployment of renewable energy to transition the world off the fossil fuels that are leading to global instability.
The Build Back Fossil Free campaign rallied ahead of U.S. President Joe Biden’s remarks at the United Nations climate summit today in Glasgow, urging Biden to take executive action to stop fossil fuel projects.
“President Biden’s claim that the U.S. is ‘leading by example’ is a slap in the face to communities suffering daily from the impacts of the climate crisis and fossil fuel extraction,” said Rees.
Stopping these fossil fuel projects would prevent a drastic increase in GHG pollution at a time when it is imperative to decrease emissions to meet domestic and international climate goals, including the Paris Agreement that President Biden rejoined.
Increased emissions under President Joe Biden would be equivalent to more than doubling existing emissions from U.S. coal plants if the U.S. moves ahead with 21 major fossil fuel infrastructure projects pending review by the Biden Administration.
“Big Oil’s continued existence is the single biggest threat to our climate, and it’s long past time to end giveaways of public money to fossil fuel companies once and for all,” said Rees.
Last week, the #BuildBackFossilFree coalition held a week of action across the country escalating the demand for President Joe Biden to be a real Climate President and directly confront environmental racism and fossil fuel companies fueling the climate crisis.
