The Netherlands just contradicted its COP26 pledge to end public finance for fossil fuels by the end of 2022 and shift this money to clean energy by issuing a commitment to insure the Brazil Santos Basin Pre-Salt Pole oil and gas production project for around USD 321 million.
As IPCC demands urgent climate action, Pacific nations step up, but Italy and UK reach new lows as rogue climate states
Yesterday, the message from the world’s leading climate scientists was their most brutal and stark yet. It was unequivocal.
Police use “shocking” level of violence to quash activists opposing Europe’s largest coal mine

British Parliament urges Government to set a “clear date” to end North Sea drilling
An influential committee of British MPs is calling on the British government to accelerate the transition from fossil fuels and set a “clear date” for the end of new oil and gas licensing in the British North Sea.
New briefing: Oil and gas industry on brink of major surge in expansion – new drilling plans approved through 2025 could exhaust 17% of the global carbon budget for 1.5°C
The new briefing, titled ”Investing in Disaster”, exposes the countries and companies that have approved the most new oil and gas extraction in 2022, and that could be responsible for major expansion through 2025.
Investing in Disaster: Recent and Anticipated Final Investment Decisions for New Oil And Gas Production Beyond the 1.5°C Limit
The briefing reveals that new oil and gas production approved to date in 2022 and at risk of approval over the next three years could cumulatively lock in 70 billion tonnes (Gt) of new carbon pollution. This is equivalent to almost two years’ worth of global carbon emissions from energy at current levels, 17 percent of the world’s remaining 1.5°C carbon budget, or the lifecycle emissions of 468 coal power plants.
IEA confirms energy crisis is fossil fuel crisis and forecasts peak in gas
The International Energy Agency (IEA) released its 2022 World Energy Outlook (WEO), underscoring that accelerating investment in clean energy and efficiency, not new fossil fuels, is the answer to both climate and energy security crises. In a marked shift for the IEA, WEO 2022 essentially declares an end to the ‘golden age of gas,’ as a result of the current energy crisis cementing an economic case against gas expansion, on top of the clear climate case.
Environmental Leaders Sit-In on Capitol Hill to Protest Schumer/Manchin Permit Deal
A group of 13 environmental and community leaders are calling on the Senate to reject Senator Manchin’s proposal to undermine environmental and community review and fast-track oil, gas, coal and mining projects.
New study suggests we are heading for 2-3 degrees warming, making “climate tipping points” irreversible
Last week, a new scientific report was published looking at climate tipping points. As one of the authors notes: “The world is heading towards 2-3C of global warming. This sets Earth on course to cross multiple dangerous tipping points that will be disastrous for people across the world”.
Big Oil’s global climate scenarios will “bust” the 1.5 degree warming of Paris Agreement
A peer reviewed paper, published today in Nature Communications, examines the global decarbonisation scenarios produced by BP, Shell and Equinor and finds they are incompatible with the climate objectives of the Paris Agreement.
