This sheet provides summary calculations for the briefing "Why Everything Manchin Says About the Mountain Valley Pipeline is Wrong".

The calculations in the upper left show the greenhouse gas pollution, and equivalent number of coal-fired power plants, for components of the Mountain Valley Pipeline's lifecycle emissions. This includes the planned expansion of MVP, if it's built, to carry 25% more gas. It also includes the upper and lower ranges for national methane leakage in the oil and gas production and distribution system, based on recent studies.

The bottom left calculations show how much greenhouse gas pollution (measured as carbon dioxide-equivalent) the United States emitted in 2005 and 2021, and how much it would need to reduce to in 2030 in order to fulfill its Paris Agreement pledge of at least 50% reduction from 2005 levels (a 39% reduction from 2021 levels).

The upper right shows the total number of coal plants that would need to be shut down to equal the pollution created by MVP, and the total plants that would have to be shut down to equal both MVP's emissions AND the 39% reduction necessary for the Paris Agreement pledge.

The bottom right shows the number of coal-fired power plant units still operating in 2022 in each southeastern state.
