Washington, D.C. – Oil Change International, in collaboration with over 200 organizations worldwide, is releasing the Big Oil Reality Check report on May 21, 2024. The report assesses the climate pledges and plans of eight international oil and gas companies – Chevron, ExxonMobil, Shell, TotalEnergies, BP, Eni, Equinor, and ConocoPhillips – against 10 criteria representing the bare minimum for aligning with the Paris Agreement to limit global heating below 1.5°C. This year’s report shows every company is rated as “Grossly Insufficient” or “Insufficient” on a majority of criteria.

Join us as we unveil the findings of the Big Oil Reality Check report and discuss the urgent need for transformative action to address the climate crisis. We will highlight two companies, TotalEnergies and Equinor, and their regional and global impacts.

  • David Tong, Oil Change International Global Industry Lead and report author. Will discuss the report findings, companies’ new tactics, and implications.

  • Charity Migwi, Oil Change International, Africa Senior Campaigner. Will focus on TotalEnergies’ impacts and the Africa region. TotalEnergies does not have a date set to stop exploration and expressly aims to expand its oil and gas production.

  • Mia Cathryn Haugen Chamberlain, Oil Change International Norway Campaigner. Will focus on Equinor and the North Sea region. Equinor does not have a date set to stop exploration, stop approving new extraction projects, or end oil and gas production. Despite the reality of the climate crisis, Equinor forecasts to expand its oil and gas production.

  • Kelly Trout, Oil Change International Research Director will be available during Q&A to answer any questions about the data and methodology.
