Oil Change International response to U.S. Supreme Court decision in West Virginia v. EPA

WASHINGTON, DC — Today, the United States Supreme Court issued a ruling in West Virginia v. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), finding that the agency’s authority under the Clean Air Act is limited in scope, and that the approach taken in President Barack Obama’s Clean Power Plan is illegal.

In response, Collin Rees, United States Program Manager at Oil Change International, released the following statement:

“This Supreme Court decision was illegitimate and wrong on many levels. It was also narrow and does almost nothing to constrain President Biden’s toolbox to address the climate crisis. As Congress flails and climate impacts mount, executive action to confront fossil fuels is more crucial than ever.

“Biden must reject the fossil fuel industry’s cynical push for deadly expansion under cover of the tragic war in Ukraine, declare a climate emergency, and aggressively wield his powers under the Defense Production Act to move away from oil and gas.

“In the battle between people and big polluters, the Supreme Court has chosen to side with Big Oil and Gas. It’s time for Biden to stand with the people who elected him and enact these overwhelmingly popular climate policies to protect communities.”
