New offshore drilling plan a slap in the face to Americans, but a gift to Big Oil

Today, President Trump’s Interior Department announced a new 5 year offshore drilling plan which opens up 90 percent of the U.S. outer continental shelf to drilling, making it potentially the largest drilling lease sale ever. In response Janet Redman, U.S. Policy Director of Oil Change International, released the following statement:

“Today’s new offshore drilling plan reveals, once again, that Trump’s energy strategy entails little more than smoothing the road for Big Oil to get whatever they want. This plan is a gift to companies that want open access to our protected ocean waters and has literally no rational basis other than to curry favor with the oil industry. This is a purely political move devoid of any economic or demand driver.

“What adds insult to this national injury is the Trump team’s move over the holiday recess to roll back offshore drilling regulations put in place after the BP gulf oil spill. If Trump has his way, not only would the expanded offshore drilling be a grave danger to our climate, it would further imperil our shorelines, fisheries, and coastal communities as well. We can’t let that happen.

“Trump continues to show he is focused on two things: Supporting billionaires and blindly rolling back the policies of the Obama administration – even if he hurts working families, the economy, and our climate by doing so.”
