Oil Change International response to Shell Arctic permit approval

In response to the Obama Administration’s approval of the final permit allowing Royal Dutch Shell to begin oil drilling activities in the Chukchi Sea off the coast of Alaska, David Turnbull, Campaigns Director of Oil Change International issued the following statement:

“The President’s decision today to give final approval for Shell to drill in the Arctic this summer is another stark reminder of the catastrophic disconnect between the nation’s energy policy and our climate imperatives. While President Obama has made strides to tackle climate pollution, he continues to undermine his own actions by allowing the industry to dig up oil that must be left in the ground if we want a stable climate. Arctic oil is simply unburnable in a climate-safe future, and the rising movement to stop Arctic drilling will continue to make this fact loud and clear.”

Just last week, Oil Change International released a report in partnership with Greenpeace USA detailing why Arctic oil drilling is incompatible with action on climate change. That report, entitled, “Untouchable: The Climate Case Against Arctic Drilling” can be found here: https://priceofoil.org/2015/08/13/untouchable-the-climate-case-against-arctic-drilling/

  • DO NOT drill for oil in the arctic. You may make money, but, in the end you will destroy all wildlife. Global warming is happening right now. In 200 years, the state of Florida will be under water. Where are YOU or your descendant’s going to live? They will be destroyed by global warming. They will not survive. We’re in it now and if you are so greedy for money that you don’t care; you will experience the consequences of global warming.

  • This is one the worst things he could have done, he is not thinking what best for all. How can he tackle climate pollution and then sign this last final permit to drill, It seems like he’s working both side of the road and we are not on the right side i guess.

  • Very upset with our President for approval when he should have used the issue as another of what need to be hundreds of teaching moments until only a fringe element of vested interests or other mentally challenged individuals fail to understand the harsh logic of ration response to climate change.
