Floegel hits it on the money, as always. However, I must confess to being less concerned about whether or not the peak was last December, next December, or the next decade than I am about what the hell to do about it.

Part of that concern stems from watching the climate movement over the last decade. A LOT of time was spent establishing that there was indeed a problem - fueled in large part by the largesse of Exxon and others.

Now here we go again - is peak oil real? How bad will it be tomorrow? For me? For the polar bears?

For all the resons Mark points to, peak is certainly real, and probably upon us. But I can think of at least six other reasons to get off oil and onto a clean energy economy ASAP - those being:
1) climate
2) war / human rights / national sercurity
3) price gouging / corporate profiteering
4) debt and poverty alleviation globally
5) community impacts / environmental justice
6) the increasing economic viability of alternatives.

Any one of these seven reasons (counting peak), should be enough. All of them together?

Now is the time.
