UK Chancellor Gordon Brown has been accused of “pathetic” inaction on climate change over the past nine years in his yearly budgets. Will this year be any different?

In a move that will anger green campaigners, he is not rising fuel duty. Apparently the Chancellor will also announce a rise in road tax for so-called “Chelsea tractor” (SUVs) of £30 to £200 a year. I have reported in the blog before how these beasts are taking over London.
Like many actions of this government this is far too little far too late: firstly it is only for new SUVs and secondly if you buy a Land-Rover Freelander for £20,000, I don’t think an extra £30 is going to make you bankrupt.

But that is what new Labour’s environmental policies are turning out to be: morally bankrupt.
